Sedation & Anxiety
Compassionate, judgement-free care for nervous patients — modern pain-free techniques with sedation available by referral.
A visit to the dentist can be a very daunting experience. Many people attempt to avoid it, resulting in unnecessary neglect of their mouth and, in many circumstances, pain. At Seagate Dental our dentists have a wealth of experience when it comes to treating individuals who have dental anxieties, fears and phobias. We set aside the time to explain treatment options, utilise modern techniques for pain-free procedures, and aim to dispel patients’ anxieties — allowing for an enjoyable experience at the dentist.
We understand that not all dental treatment is the same. We endeavour to carry out all treatment on site, however a few patients would still find it easier to have treatment carried out under sedation. Sedation is carried out in specialist centres under referral from ourselves.
Helping a Friend or Relative Who's Anxious
People with dental phobias are unlikely to arrange an appointment for themselves. They often know they require treatment but need a helping hand from a friend or relative to attend. If you know someone who has been ignoring the existence of dentists, please take note of the following:
1
Dental anxieties and phobias are very real. The neglect that follows can be embarrassing — empathy and understanding help more than anything.
2
Encourage the anxious patient to register in person — this lets them familiarise themselves with the surroundings before any examination.
3
Anxious patients are very good at not turning up! Friends and relatives are invaluable in helping them attend, and we can accommodate someone in the surgery for moral support.
4
Get them to see their doctor — medication may be available to help them feel more relaxed about attending.
5
At an initial appointment we carry out a full examination and discuss options. Unless requested, we wouldn’t carry out treatment on the first visit.
6
Anxious patients sometimes use lack of money as an excuse. NHS check-ups are free, and many patients are entitled to subsidised or free treatment.
7
Friends and relatives will listen to you. If you’ve had good dental experiences, tell them — the positives are often drowned out by negative stereotypes.
♥ It is important that everyone attends regular check-ups to screen for tooth decay and gum problems — but also to screen for mouth cancer. Incidences of mouth cancer have increased by a third over the last decade and, worryingly, it is now seen in younger people. Early detection from regular check-ups is the key to long-term survival.
